Schmickler is a composer whose work includes instrumental composition electronic and computer music, sound installations, performance and improvisation. Most of his works are created for multi-channel sound projection. Recurring interests include synthetic sound, algorithmic systems, spatial texture and sonification.

Schmickler's music synthesizes the German tradition of early electronic music with forward-looking interests in harmonic colors and microtonal tuning, both from  spectralism and experimentalism and clubculture. The result is an explorative, uncompromising music that is sensually attractive at the same time. His music appeals to unusually different audiences, from specialized avant-gardists for their microtonal investigations to casual listeners for their generous forms and their impressive listening experience.
